Bluetooth Low Energy - Short range data transmission

What is Bluetooth Low Energy?

Bluetooth Low Energy (also known as BLE) is a low-energy short-range wireless communication standard for short-range communication. The update was introduced with Bluetooth 4.0 in 2010 due to the need for IoT, wearable and home automation applications.

Is BLE data transmission secure?

The BLE uses several techniques to protect privacy and against attacks. To ensure security, data is encrypted using AES-128 encryption to protect data in transit and uses a secure link system to prevent unauthorized devices from connecting.

AES-128 (Advanced Encryption Standard) is an encryption algorithm that encrypts and decrypts data in blocks of a fixed length using a 128-bit cryptographic key . It has been adopted by the US government and is widely used to protect sensitive data around the world.

BLE communication in home automation systems

BLE is used in home automation sensors for communication with the home automation gateway because it has several advantages over other technologies. First, the BLE being energy efficient allows operation for months or even years on a single battery. Secondly, the BLE having a short range makes it ideal for indoor use (home or office). The sensors and the gateway can communicate securely via the BLE, preventing intrusion into the home automation system.
